5 Easy Steps to House Training Your Dog

If you have a puppy or an adult dog who’s having a hard time house training, don’t give up. There are some simple steps you can take to get your dog off on the right foot.

First, set up a consistent routine. Create a schedule for yourself and your family that includes when your dog should be outside, when they can have their free time inside, and how long you’ll allow them to stay in the house before taking them outside again. Make sure all of your family members are aware of the schedule and follow it consistently.

Second, you need to interrupt your puppy’s “accidents” indoors and reward them when they go outside. This can be as simple as making a noise to let your dog know it’s time to go outside, or it could be more elaborate like offering a treat for going potty outside.

Third, you need to establish a den or area where your puppy has her own place to eliminate. This can be a crate, small pen or even a large beach towel or cardboard box.

Fourth, you need to reinforce that this area is her own and not something else. This means you need to praise her every time she eliminates in this area and you need to give her treats when she finishes eliminating in the den.

Fifth, you need to keep her out of the den when she’s not eliminating, or you need to limit how long she’s in the den, or she’ll soil the whole area.
