No matter what style you want your dog house to have, high-quality materials are important to protect it from weather and your pup’s rambunctiousness. Wood is one popular material, but there are many other options as well, including plastic and metal. Durability and maintenance requirements are other important considerations when choosing a dog house roof material.
A good roof is the final piece to a well-built dog house, as it protects your furry friend from rain and snow. While a flat roof is easy to build, you may prefer a slanted or sloped one to avoid rain and snow collecting and accumulating on the top of the house. You can even build a hinged roof, which is convenient for cleaning, feeding, or retrieving toys.
Whatever your roof design, you’ll need to build a base from pressure-treated 2x4s to support it. To construct the base, follow your sketch and cut four angled pieces of plywood for each side of the house. Nail each piece of plywood to its corresponding corner posts.
Then add a layer of tar paper or another waterproof surface on the top of the plywood. You can also apply shingles or other roofing materials to the tar paper to give the structure extra protection. When using shingles, make sure they overlap to prevent water leaks. Alternatively, you can use corrugated metal for a durable, waterproof option that requires little to no maintenance. Lastly, paint the entire roof to protect it from the elements and to make it look nice.
