If you want to add a roof to your doghouse, there are many options. Some are more affordable and durable than others. Choose a material that is weather resistant and easy to clean. Asphalt shingles are inexpensive and come in light colors that reflect sunlight. It’s also a good idea to insulate the house and cover it with plywood for added protection.
When you’re ready to begin building, refer to your plan and purchase the necessary materials. These include 2x4s, sheets of plywood, 3 inch screws, 1 1/2-inch screws and roofing nails.
Depending on the size of your doghouse, you may need to add an additional support beam in the center of the base. For this, measure and cut two long 2x4s equal to the planned length of the base and three short pieces that match the width. Set the long pieces aside and fit the short ones against the vertical frame supports in a rectangle pattern (Image 2). Fasten the 2x4s together with a countersink bit and 3-inch galvanized wood screws.
When you’re done, test the strength of the frame by shaking and shifting it. If it holds up, begin measuring and cutting the plywood panels for the sides of the structure. The roof panels should be slightly larger than the side panels to ensure a snug fit against the frame. Secure the panels to the rafters using the same method as used for the floor panel and overlapping each row.
