Unlike many of the surf shops in the area, which were run by people with little knowledge of surfing or who simply had a passion for selling boards, Houghton had a true passion for the sport. He hired good people and made a great environment, which attracted others to the store.
“There was a real sense of community,” said Matt Rivers, 69, whose father worked as head lifeguard on Nauset Beach and took him to Jasper’s as a child. “The sand floor, the couches, the keg parties — it was just a great place to be.”
Word about the new shop spread quickly. One day, a truck driver pulled in and asked, “What kind of store is this?” Houghton explained that it was a surf shop, and the man bought a board and wetsuit and stashed them at Jasper’s for future trips to the Cape. He also fixed the Coke machine, and stopped in to talk surfing with Houghton and Foley. That became a regular stop for those traveling to the beach.
