Despite its cliched horror comedy, Doghouse is a decent movie. It borrows from Shaun of the Dead but fails to be as clever. It is also very misogynistic. Throughout the film, men dismiss women as mentally unstable. It also has a few cheesy jokes about shagging zombies.
Doghouse is an indie comedy/horror movie directed by Jake West. It’s aimed at a post-curry, post-footy, lad-mag reading crowd. It’s a style of quirky Brit comedy/horror similar to Severance and Shaun of the Dead.
The plot is simple – a group of men are in town to help a buddy deal with a nasty divorce. They find out that all the women in the town have been infected by a toxin that turns them into zombies. They must then fight off the entire town to stave off the zombies.
The film is well-made and features memorable creatures. It’s worth a look if you’re a fan of zombie movies. But it’s not a classic. Moreover, the characters are unlikable.
Doghouse is a comedy that’s not quite as good as Cockneys vs Zombies, Lesbian Vampire Killers or Zombie Bride. However, it’s still decent and has a lot of laughs. Compared to its predecessors, it’s not as overly-ironic or sexist as Lesbian Vampire Killers or Zombie bride. Its premise is pretty simple but the film has plenty of misogynistic and homophobic jokes. Its acting is not that good. It’s a little underdeveloped.
Doghouse has been released in the United Kingdom on 12 June 2009. It received mainstream release in 2010. It was also screened at several film festivals in 2009. It’s a good comedy/horror movie that has some good laughs but isn’t great.
