The roof of a dog house is a crucial element, both because it keeps the interior of the doghouse dry and warm and protects the pet from rain and snow. A well-designed doghouse roof can be flat, mono-pitched, gable, or pyramid-shaped. If the location of the doghouse will be in an area that receives a lot of snow, it’s critical to consider how much weight the roof needs to be able to support in a snowstorm.
Before beginning to build the roof, it’s important to decide on and purchase all the supplies you need. This includes plywood and 2×4 parts, as well as roofing material. Roofing material will not only protect the wood of the doghouse from rain and snow, but it will also help prolong its life. A common choice is asphalt shingles, which are fairly easy to obtain and usually last 20-30 years.
Once you have all of your supplies and have a clear idea of how long the roof should be, start by building the base. Use the cut list that is included with your plan to create a frame of four 2×4 pieces (two long and two short). Attach these to each other using 1 inch nails, and then attach the base piece to them.
Next, determine the pitch of your roof by measuring the height from the floor to the top of the apex. Then, mark the measurements on your framing pieces, and cut them to size. You will also need to affix two ridge board studs to the apex of the roof, and then add the length of a piece of 1 x 6 that will run from each end of the house to the ridge.
