Dog houses are a great way to use some of your favorite dog fabric. This quilt is fun to make and will delight any dog lover in your life.
This pattern makes a nice throw size quilt or wall hanging. The fabric choices can be anything from solids to printed fabrics featuring dogs. It is machine appliqued with raw edge technique.
A little bit of preparation is needed to help ensure that your pet’s kennel quilt will last. You will want to make sure that the quilt is well made and is free of any loose threads or trims that could catch on your pets claws. You will also want to keep the quilt simple, using small tight quilting stitches that won’t catch on the claws of your pets.
For the quilting, you will want to use a small stitch length (e.g. 14 stitches/inch) and a good quality cotton quilting thread that will not shed. It is a good idea to pre-wash your quilting fabrics to get rid of any shrinkage.
When you have completed the quilting, the next step is to layer it with a piece of batting and a quilt backing. This is called “sandwiching”. Depending on the size of your quilt, you may choose to spray baste it or pin it together with 1 1/2″ stainless steel pins.
Once the sandwich is complete, turn the binding strip (tail #1) to the back side and sew it to the edge of the quilt. Then, fold the tail #2 to its back side and sew it to the next edge of the quilt (tail #3). Repeat this process for all edges of the quilt. When you are finished, the two trimmed binding strip tails should overlap by 2 1/2″.
