How to Teach Your Dog to Find a Dog House Key

Dogs are denning animals and need a place to go to feel secure. Providing your pup with a dedicated space such as a crate or full-fledged dog house is one of the best ways to make them feel comfortable and safe. They will also be able to escape the typical household noise and traffic if they are stressed or need a break from the everyday routine.

To teach your pup to find your keys, you can start by placing them in a visible location such as on the counter or table. Play with them and let them sniff them. When they find them, reward them. Repeat this process, increasing the distance from which you move the keys each time. Eventually, you can hide them in a spot that your dog cannot see. Repeat this process several times over the course of a few days and ask your dog to find them. Continue to challenge your dog by moving the keys in different locations each day.

If you want to teach your pup to find your keys without a command, begin by placing the keys on a cloth keychain or lanyard. This will keep them safe and secure while you are away from home and make it easier for your dog to find when you are ready to leave. Then, lay the keys near your dog and watch for him to interact with them or pick them up. If he does, give him the command, ‘find my keys’.
