The Benefits of a Dog House Line

A dog house line (also known as a puppy training line) allows you to stop unwanted behaviour in a safe, gentle and non-confrontational way. It is especially useful during those demanding early days, weeks and months when puppies are new to their environment and people. It can be used to stop jumping up on visitors, chewing inappropriate items and many more unruly behaviours.

A long line or house line is simply a length of rope/fabric (usually nylon) or more recently Biothane which is attached to the collar and dragged behind your dog. It does not have a handle and it is used to help train recalls or to prevent dogs from running off in an unsafe direction. It also helps to train good leash manners, preventing pulling and allowing you to control your dog without the confinement of a short lead.

It also helps with resource guarding issues, attention seeking dogs and other difficult to manage behaviours as it reduces the need to invade a dog’s space or use physical contact/aggression in order to control them. It is a particularly useful tool for working with timid or fearful dogs as it allows you to increase the distance between you and your dog while still being in control.

You can purchase a long line from your local pet store or online but it is fairly easy to make one yourself. Simply purchase a lightweight nylon leash of a suitable length for your needs, cut it off the looped end and then tie one end securely to the clip on the collar.
