When you hear the term dog house, most people automatically think of a small shelter for a dog that is situated on one’s property or backyard. Those kinds of doghouses are indeed very viable and often serve the purpose of protecting a pup from the elements.
There are, however, other types of dog houses that are not as well known. These are referred to as doghouse bulkheads and may be a bit more elaborate than those units that are simply designed to look like a basement entrance.
These models are usually constructed from wood, and feature a slanted roof to shed rain and snow. They are also designed to be raised off the ground for more protection from insects and to deter fleas. Additionally, they are often lined with bedding like cedar shavings to help retain body heat and provide a clean environment for the pup.
The best type of doghouse will depend on the range of temperatures and weather conditions that a particular region experiences throughout the year. During colder weather, the house should be no larger than 50% of the height from your dog’s shoulders to his toes (C). This allows for adequate body heat retention and prevents the interior temperature from getting too hot.
The Petsfit doghouse is a great example of this type of model, with Finnish Spruce panels and multiple available sizes. It is also raised off the ground to prevent rot and features a slanted roof and plastic construction. It also has a recessed door that is easy for the dog to open and close, as well as an internal heating map that can be switched on and off when necessary.
