If you’re worried about Fido getting cold and uncomfortable in his or her outdoor home, there are many safe ways to warm it up. While some of these ideas require plumbing or electrical work, others are simple to do and will make your pet’s house a more comfortable retreat.
One easy way to warm up your doghouse is to use a heating pad. A popular choice is the RIOGOO pet heating pad, which has a thermostatic control and digital timer to keep it from overheating and wasting power. Other options include using a basic dog bed that will warm with your dog’s body heat, such as the Petsfit wooden doghouse with an asphalt roof that opens and a self-warming insulation layer made of Mylar (the same stuff space blankets are made of).
Raising your pup’s house off the ground may also help. Since the ground absorbs and loses heat more quickly than the air, raising your pup’s abode may help it stay warmer. Be sure to not stuff the house with straw or hay, though, as these can serve as habitats for fleas and mites.
Another option is to add a window, which will let in the sun’s warmth during the day. Be careful, however, as the sun can also cause the outside of the house to get hotter than necessary. If you opt for this method, be sure to use a shade that will prevent the sun’s direct heat from shining in through the glass.
